Your Town Council

Council Meetings are normally held on the 3rd Thursday of each month, except August – see the diary of meetings for more information. The Council also has a number of sub-committees and working group to deal with specific issues such as Planning consultations and Finance. We encourage residents to attend all our meetings and you can see dates and agendas in the Council Meeting Calendar accessed from the Home Page.

Darley Dale lies in the Derwent Valley in Derbyshire. It is situated in the heart of the UK, 20 miles north of the city of Derby, on the border of the Peak District National Park between Matlock and Bakewell.

The Town Clerk team are based in the Lady Whitworth Room in the Whitworth Centre from Monday to Thursday. You can email them at townclerk@darleydale.gov.uk.

Our committees are designed to deal with specific issues on behalf of the Council so that we can maximise the time for decision making when the monthly full Council meets. Committees are open to the public and have published agendas and minutes.

Current Committees are Community Services, Planning and Finance and you can see the dates they are due to meet along with supporting papers in the Council Meeting Calendar.

Working groups are less formal but just as important and allow Councillors to work with local residents and experts on important issues such as Climate and Communications. Darley Dale Town Council grants funds to local voluntary groups and charitable organisations where the use can be shown to be of benefit to Darley Dale or residents of Darley Dale.

The Council has powers to give financial aid under various statutes, notably the Local Government Act 1972:

• s137 in respect of expenditure for purposes not otherwise authorised, which are considered to be in the interests of, and bringing direct benefit to, the area and its community;
• s142 in respect of provision of information concerning services available
• s144 in respect of encouragement of visitors; provision of conference & other facilities.
• s145 in respect of provision of entertainment or development of arts and crafts.

Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976:

• s19 in respect of provision of recreational, social and sporting facilities;

There is a limited budget each year for grants and the amounts requested often exceed the fund available. It is therefore important that all the questions on the application form are answered as fully as possible to provide a detailed picture of your proposed project or of the activities of your organisation within the town.

The Council has four funding aims targeting Loneliness and Social Isolation, Youth Projects, Environmental Schemes and Health and Well being. Projects addressing these aims will be given priority although any project will be considered.

Applications are accepted at any time throughout the year, and can be made for help towards a special project, or the everyday running costs of your organisation.

There is a Grants Fund agreed within our annual budge that has an allocated budget of £4000 for us to give away during the year as single grants under £1,000, and these are disbursed quarterly.

Remember; we are a Town Council, and our resources are limited. Most grants are given for a maximum of a few hundred pounds only, although we do give larger amounts.
